A Kenyan CV is usually two A4 pages in reverse chronological order. It carries your contact details, a short profile, education with your KCSE grade, work experience, skills, professional memberships and, usually, referees. Leave the photo off unless the advert asks, and keep marital status, religion, ethnicity and your ID number off. Public-service jobs also need the PSC.2 form.
Checked 13 October 2026. Every rule below names its source.
The rules below come from the Public Service Commission’s form and FAQ, recent public adverts, the career offices at Strathmore and Zetech universities, and the job boards and recruiters BrighterMonday, Fuzu and Corporate Staffing. Where they disagree, as on referees and length, the page names who says what.
Neither the Data Protection Act 2019 nor the Employment Act mentions CVs. Both bind employers, so advice drawn from them about sensitive details is an inference, and the page marks it that way.
| Point | What to do |
|---|---|
| Name, length and paper | Call it a CV and plan on two A4 pages. Stated maximums range from two pages (Fuzu) to four A4 pages (Zetech), and public adverts such as Kenya Power’s ask for a “detailed” CV with no limit. |
| Photo | Leave it off unless the advert asks. An employer quoted by Business Daily says a photo is not needed “unless expressly requested”, and BrighterMonday says an ATS-friendly CV has no images. |
| Date of birth, gender, nationality | Optional, says Zetech’s career office. BrighterMonday says to leave age off, and public-service forms collect all three separately. |
| Marital status, religion, ethnicity | Leave them off. Corporate Staffing and BrighterMonday say to drop marital status and religion, and no source asks for ethnicity. The Data Protection Act 2019 treats marital status, belief and ethnic social origin as sensitive data, though it does not mention CVs. |
| ID number and KRA PIN | Keep them off. Corporate Staffing says to leave the ID number out, and the PSC.2 form and public portals collect both. |
| Education and memberships | Put the highest qualification first and include KCSE with its grade, as the PSC.2 form does. List professional bodies with your membership number. |
| Referees | Sources disagree. The PSC.2 form has two referee slots, Corporate Staffing says at least three, and Strathmore says to hold them back until you are invited to interview. |
| Clearances | Leave DCI, HELB, KRA, EACC and CRB clearances off. The Ministry of Roads and Transport and Kenya Power collect them from shortlisted candidates or new hires. |
| Letter and file type | Send an application or cover letter with emailed and paper applications (KenGen). Use PDF unless the advert says otherwise (Strathmore), though BrighterMonday prefers Word. |

Two A4 pages is the safe default, because every source checked accepts it. The upper limits differ. Strathmore says one to three pages outside academic roles, Zetech up to four A4 pages, Corporate Staffing two or three, and Fuzu two at most unless you have a long career. Public-sector adverts ask for “a detailed CV” and set no limit.
Start with contact details and a short profile, then education and work experience with the most recent first, then skills, training, professional memberships and referees. Zetech and the PSC.2 form put education first, while Strathmore and Corporate Staffing lead with experience. More on length is in how long a CV should be.
Put your name, phone number, a professional email address and your town at the top. Sources split on the address. Fuzu says to include it with your postcode, while BrighterMonday says area of residence is “not necessary”.
Date of birth, gender and nationality are optional, according to Zetech. Leave off marital status, religion and your ID number, as Corporate Staffing advises, and keep ethnicity off too.
The law doesn’t mention CVs, but it points the same way. The Data Protection Act 2019 lists marital status, belief and “ethnic social origin” as sensitive personal data, and section 5(3) of the Employment Act bars discrimination in recruitment on grounds including religion, ethnic or social origin and marital status. Both bind employers, so applying them to a job seeker’s CV is an inference.
Only if the advert asks for one. No Kenyan government or university source covers CV photos, and none of the public forms or adverts checked asks for one. Fredrick Komen, General Manager at Mace Food, told Business Daily a photo is not needed “unless expressly requested”, though he named receptionists, salespersons and financial managers as roles where one is necessary.
In the same article, HR officer Vanice Olal says “different organisations specify which particular photo they need from the candidate”. BrighterMonday’s ATS guide says an ATS-friendly CV has no images.
Sources disagree. The PSC.2 form has two slots for referees “who have interacted with you professionally”, and PSCIMS will not consider an online application without them. Corporate Staffing says at least three, two from work and one personal. Strathmore says to leave them off “in the interest of data protection” until you are invited to interview, and Fuzu says they can follow at that stage.
For public-service jobs, the form decides. For a private-sector CV, two work referees who have agreed to be named is a reasonable middle course, since KCB and Safaricom check references late in the process.
List KCSE under education, below your degree or diploma, with the grade. The PSC.2 form treats KCSE as an award with a grade column, and Corporate Staffing’s sample CV lists it the same way. BrighterMonday says school certificates are for recent graduates and tertiary education for qualified professionals, but public employers still ask for KCSE. Add professional body membership with your number, since the form asks for “Membership/Registration No.” and some adverts require membership “in good standing” (Ministry of Roads and Transport).
Leave the Chapter Six clearances off. The DCI certificate of good conduct, HELB clearance, KRA tax compliance certificate, EACC self-declaration form and CRB report are documents you present later, at interview for the Ministry of Roads and Transport and only after an offer at Kenya Power.
Leave out certificates you won’t hold by the closing date, as the Ministry’s advert says. PSCIMS cites section 100(4) of the Public Service Commission Act 2017, under which false or misleading information carries a fine of up to KSh 200,000, up to two years in prison, or both.
Public Service Commission jobs use the PSC.2 (Revised 2016) form, filed online or downloaded and delivered by post, courier or hand (PSC FAQ). It collects what the CV leaves out, including date of birth, ID number, KRA PIN, gender, ethnicity, home county and disability, with dates as dd-mm-yyyy. The FAQ says “we shortlist by ethnicity to address constitutional requirements and regional representation”, which ties to Article 232 of the Constitution on representing Kenya’s diverse communities.
Nyandarua County asks for its own form plus a detailed CV and copies of certificates and the ID card, by hand or registered mail. Kenya Power, KCB and Safaricom take applications through online portals, and KenGen uses its portal for most roles and email or hard copy for its senior finance role.
Send a cover or application letter with emailed and paper applications, as Zetech advises and KenGen asks (see the cover letter format guide). The Ministry, Kenya Power and KenGen adverts all say canvassing leads to disqualification.
OneCV’s templates are set up for A4 by default, and page breaks show in the live preview as you type, so you can see when a CV runs past two pages. Any section heading can be renamed, so References can read Referees. Optional fields such as date of birth or nationality appear only if you add them with “Add details”, and a photo appears only if you add one.
Education, Certificates, Courses and Organisations hold your KCSE grade, professional qualifications, short courses and membership numbers. Start in the CV maker. The free plan includes one CV, one cover letter, all 105 templates and unlimited PDF downloads with no watermark, with no card needed, and Pro costs $10 a month or $48 a year for unlimited documents. The ATS resume checker shows the text a parser reads from your PDF before you upload it to a portal.
CV is the usual word. Government adverts and employers such as Kenya Power and KenGen ask for a detailed CV, while Safaricom and some university career offices also say résumé.
Yes, if you are a student or recent graduate. Fuzu says a single page is preferable for them and BrighterMonday says one page works best for entry-level applicants, while mid- and senior-level candidates can use two.
Follow the advert first. Strathmore and Zetech recommend PDF, BrighterMonday prefers Word for applicant tracking systems, and Fuzu accepts either.
No source sets one for CVs. The PSC.2 form writes every date as dd-mm-yyyy, including employment dates, so day-first dates or month and year in that order are the closest match.
No. The DCI certificate of good conduct and the HELB, KRA, EACC and CRB clearances are documents you hand over at interview or after an offer, and no source says to list them on the CV.
