How the first job templates read in our parser test
In our test of all 105 OneCV templates on 17 October 2026, one fictional resume went through four text extractors, which do the first step of most resume parsers.
Of these 29 templates, 21 are one column, 5 put the contact details in a sidebar and 3 split the sections into two columns under a full-width header. Every job stayed in one piece in all four extractors for all 29 of them, and 7 came out clean in all four, with every section, heading, list and date in its place: Happy, Grey Goose, Web Worker, Dark Leaves, Almost Black, Typewriter and Grenadine Red.
No other style managed that. The usual slip was a date read away from its entry, which pdfminer did in 10 of the 29, because the dates sit on the right. With little work history your education carries the page, so set Date & Location Position to Below Title in Customize to keep each date with its school or job.
Writing a resume with little or no experience
Lead with what you have. For most students that’s education, then projects, part-time work, volunteering and clubs. Our guide to an internship resume with no experience walks through each section with a one-page example.
Keep it to one page. UC Berkeley’s career office recommends “a simple, one-page format” for college students.
Send a short cover letter with it. Our guide to a cover letter with no experience shows one written for the same student. You need to be at least 16 to use OneCV.
Still choosing a tool? We compared free resume builders for college students on free PDF downloads, student offers and free-plan limits.
Before you send your first resume
- Describe projects and part-time jobs with what you did and what came of it, with a number where you have one.
- Use a plain, professional email address.
- Put your PDF through the ATS resume checker to see the text a parser gets from it, in the order it comes out.
