How the creative templates read in our parser test
In our test of all 105 OneCV templates on 17 October 2026, one fictional resume went through four text extractors, which do the first step of most resume parsers.
Of these 31 templates, 21 are one column, 6 put the contact details in a sidebar and 4 split the sections into two columns under a full-width header. Every job stayed in one piece in all four extractors for 30 of them, and 9 came out clean in all four, with every section, heading, list and date in its place: Happy, Coral Navy, Space, Grey Goose, Web Worker, Dark Leaves, Almost Black, Typewriter and Grenadine Red.
Creative templates came out best of the six styles, with 9 of 31 clean in all four. Color and decoration don’t change the text an extractor reads. The one creative template that broke up a job, Mint Line, is a one-column design, so check whichever template you pick with the ATS resume checker.
When to use a creative template
Use one for design, media, marketing and other creative roles, or for a small company where a person reads every application.
For jobs you apply to through a large employer’s online form, a simple or modern design is the safer choice. You can keep both versions, because switching templates doesn’t change your content.
Add a link to your portfolio in your personal details, so the reader can go straight to your work.
Before you send a creative resume
- Make sure your name, the job title you want and your contact details stand out first.
- Check that the text still reads in a sensible order. Put your PDF through the ATS resume checker to see the text a parser gets from it, in the order it comes out.
- Read it once on a phone and once printed in black and white.
Questions about these templates
For creative roles, yes, because the design itself shows your taste. For roles in conservative fields, or where you apply through a large online form, a plainer design is safer.
They read the text, so what matters is whether it comes out in order. Greenhouse, an applicant tracking system, lists resumes with a columned layout among the ones its parser can get wrong, so check a two-column design before you send it through an online form.
