How the modern templates read in our parser test
In our test of all 105 OneCV templates on 17 October 2026, one fictional resume went through four text extractors, which do the first step of most resume parsers.
Of these 42 templates, 17 are one column, 13 put the contact details in a sidebar and 12 split the sections into two columns under a full-width header. Every job stayed in one piece in all four extractors for 35 of them, and 4 came out clean in all four, with every section, heading, list and date in its place: Atlantic Blue, Olive Ash, Royal Blue and Sea Pearl.
Sidebars held up well. None of the 13 modern templates with the contact details in a sidebar had a job broken up by another section. All seven that did split the page into two columns under a full-width header: Atlantic Crest, Confident Grid, Mercury Panel, Slate Dawn, Evergreen Slate, Sage Horizon and Accentuated Red. If you want a two-column look for an online application, a sidebar is the safer kind.
When a modern template fits
A modern design suits most office, tech, marketing and sales jobs, especially when your resume will be read on screen or shared as a link.
Greenhouse, an applicant tracking system, lists resumes with a columned layout among the ones its parser can get wrong, so check a two-column design before you send it through an online form.
Every color, font and spacing setting can be changed in Customize, so you can tone a modern design down for a conservative employer without retyping.
Before you send a modern resume
- Read the PDF on a phone. Colored text on a colored sidebar should still be easy to read at a small size.
- Keep the accent color for headings and lines, and the body text dark.
- Put your PDF through the ATS resume checker to see the text a parser gets from it, in the order it comes out.
Questions about these templates
Usually more color, bolder headings and a less traditional layout, such as a sidebar for your contact details and skills. The content and section order are the same as in any resume.
It depends on the layout more than the color.
